Mining Sci-Fi Novels for Billion Dollar Business Ideas

I heard about a website called Technovelgy via Steph Smith on a recent episode of the My First Million podcast šŸŽ™ļø

Tagline of the siteā€¦

Explore the inventions, technology and ideas of science fiction writers at Technovelgy (that's tech-novel-gee!) - over 3,800 are available.

Steph explains that Packy McCormick thenā€¦

ā€¦ took this very outdated HTML site that's hard to navigate, and he put it into this database... so it basically takes all the ideas ā€“ not just the books but the ideas within these sci-fi novels ā€“ and says "does it exist today?"

And so you have this Google Sheet with 3,500+ ideas from sci-fi novels going back to 1634 šŸ¤Æ

Some of those ideas have since become reality.

šŸ“ Packy writesā€¦

Jonathan Swift foresaw 3D modeling, search engines, biofuels, and even floating rocks in Gulliverā€™s Travels, way back in 1726?Ā

ā€¦ Ephraim Chambers wrote about humanoid robots nearly 300 years ago in 1727ā€™s Cyclopaedia?Ā

ā€¦ When Jeff Bezos walked through the logic behind selling books online in this legendary 1997 interview, he looked insanely prescient. But H.G. Wells imagined e-commerce 98 years earlier in When the Sleeper Wakes (and remote work, handheld video players, a proto-internet, and more).Ā

In other words, the ideas found in sci-fi novels are often way ahead of their time šŸ˜µā€šŸ’«

Browse through the database ā€“ aka The Sci-Fi Idea Bank ā€“ and you might find an idea from 100 years ago that could be feasible with modern technology.

šŸ’° As Packy puts itā€¦

ā€‹ā€‹If history is a guide, there are billion-dollar-startups hiding all over the Sci-Fi Idea Bank.Ā

Coffee Website Replaced Their Full-Time Income

Today's email is brought to you by The Authority Site System (TASS).

I've now done in-depth reviews of 40+ popular affiliate marketing courses, and TASS ranks #1.

That ranking isn't just based on my own extensive experience with the course ā€“ the 51 student reviews we've collected have the biggest say in the ranking šŸ¤©

A recent reviewā€¦

My wife and I worked through the material and found it immensely helpful. Based on the AH training, we began The Coffee Folk, an affiliate marketing website. It started slowly, but reached the point that it was earning around the amount either of us would make with our full-time jobs.

Anotherā€¦

What ultimately won me over were the numerous positive reviews of the course and the fact that they donā€™t make false promises of quick wealth. Instead, they provide a blueprint to steadily build a successful, profit-making affiliate website in a couple of years.

Through January 8th you can get access to the updated 2024 version of the training for the lowest possible price šŸ„³

This Weird Niche Plugin Makes $8,400/Month

Leandro Zubrezki is the founder of Notion2Sheets.

Itā€™s a "Google Workspace Add-On" that lets you sync your Notion databases with Google Sheets, so you can use the power of both platforms šŸ’Ŗ

I didn't think there'd be much demand for such a niche product, but according to a recent interview Notion2Sheets is earning $8,400/month šŸ¤‘

In the interview, Leandro sharesā€¦

I was a freelance software developer for 8 years, but I decided it was time to pursue my long-overdue wish of building my own products.

šŸ’” How he got the ideaā€¦

In May 2021, Notion released the beta of their public APIā€¦ I knew Notion before but never invested too much in the productā€¦Ā

I deep dived into the product itself, and communities like Reddit and Facebook groups to better understand users and realized that syncing databases with Sheets would enable some workflows that were currently not possible otherwise.

šŸ“£ How he spread the wordā€¦

The marketing strategy revolved heavily around social media engagement.

Participated in relevant discussions by replying to questions and mentioning my product if relevant.

Sharing brief videos and screenshots showcasing the capabilities of the tool further boosted visibility.

šŸ’° Monetizationā€¦

Initially, the tool was free. However, after introducing paid plans, it took two months to acquire my first 10 paying customers.

Growth has always been organic, I am active on Reddit, Twitter, Facebook Groups and where Notion users hang and try to provide value to them, mentioning Notion2Sheets when appropriate.

We often share stories in this newsletter of people "scratching their own itch."Ā

But Leandro didn't build Notion2Sheets to solve a problem he experienced himself.

Instead, he dove into an online community in search of a common problem that he could help solve šŸ§

What communities are you involved with or interested in?

Try out Leandro's approach there, see if there's an opportunity to provide a useful product or service.

šŸ—‚ $1.2 Million Part-Time Affiliate Site

From the archive, published November 2022ā€¦

The site is GiftLab.co and it basically lists a bunch of gift ideas for different types of people and occasions šŸŽ

For example, these are the top three pages on the site (source: Ahrefs)ā€¦

According to a recent interview with the founder, GiftLab is only 5 years old and has already earned about $1.2 million via affiliate marketing.

Sounds like a fast path to success, but check out the revenue progressionā€¦

  • $0 in Year 1

  • $9,000 in Year 2

  • $40,000 in Year 3

And then presumably over $1 million in the last two years alone šŸ¤‘

But how many people are willing to put serious time and resources into a project for two years while earning way below minimum wage and no guarantee that theyā€™ll eventually win big?

Dropping Her Kindle Led to a $50K/Month Business

Lou Rice is the founder of Strapsicle, which sells innovative silicone straps for e-readers like the Kindle for comfortable one-handed reading šŸ–ļø

According to a recent interview, the business earns $50,000 per month šŸ¤Æ

Which is incredible for 2 reasonsā€¦

  1. They started the business less than two years ago (source)

  2. Who knew there was such demand for this kind of product?

šŸš€ The origin storyā€¦

Lou Rice was breastfeeding her son Archie one night when disaster struckā€”she dropped her Kindle on his head!

[Next Day], Ben [Louā€™s husband] fashioned a silicone strap with staples to attach Louā€™s Kindle to her handā€¦

After positive initial testing, Ben and Lou explored whether there were any similar products on the market and found very few competitors.

Nextā€¦

Luckily, they had an existing manufacturing contact in China through a friend to produce prototypes and ultimately fulfill inventory orders.

It took 2-3 rounds of back and forth with the factory to perfect the design, dimensions, tension, and sizing of the very first Strapsicle strap.

šŸ—£ļø Lou explains how they got the word outā€¦

We decided to launch and give it away for free and people just paid shippingā€¦ It was a bit unconventional.

She posted on her LinkedIn and in some relevant Facebook groupsā€¦

It went absolutely nutsā€¦ like hundreds of comments, loads of support, and then people started buying.

That gave them some leverageā€¦

These people only paid the shipping costs, and they were only asked to provide feedback about the strap.

This approach allowed Lou and Ben to begin building community and start a dialogue with real customers using Strapsicle on their Kindles. Plus, it enabled gathering user-generated content and reviews to aid subsequent marketing efforts.

Then šŸ‘‡

Lou soon stumbled upon BookTok ā€“ an engaged subculture on TikTok obsessed with readingā€¦ BookTok participants were an ideal target marketā€¦

She reached out to lots of micro-influencers, offered them free samples to try, and provided discount codes they could share with their followers to drive salesā€¦

This micro-influencer strategy combined with the initial free giveaway enabled Strapsicle to gain significant organic traction in just its first 3 months in business.

At some point they also started selling on Amazon, and now they're doing $50,000 in monthly revenue šŸ’°

Last words from Louā€¦

You've just gotta keep going. You will not be able to see the wood for the trees for at least the first year. It'll feel like you're a hot mess. I still feel like that.Ā

But you just keep going and eventually you will start to see traction.

So Lou dropping her Kindle led to a $50k/month business.

Have you had any mishaps lately?

Could there be a business opportunity there? šŸ¤”

šŸ—‚ The Dancing Sausage Charging $50,000 Per Post

From the archive, published July 2023ā€¦

A guilty pleasure of mine is to check out the latest Nobody Sausage videos on one of these platforms šŸ‘‡

They are short videos of animated sausages ā€“ yes, really ā€“ dancing or doing a skit šŸ˜‚

It all started on TikTok in March of 2020 with this 11-second videoā€¦

As you can see, the animation has come a long way in just 3 years.

Brazilian-born Kael Cabral is the creator of Nobody Sausage, and the story goesā€¦

When Kaelā€¦ posted his first video on TikTok, he wasnā€™t expecting to blow up, overnight there were thousands of views and followers. And that was the start of an era.

Info on Kaelā€™s background here, includingā€¦

Due to his neurodivergence, Kael had difficulties socializing and interacting with other kids. In the meantime he found himself through art, such as drawing and painting which enabled him to create his own comic books.Ā Ā

He majored in Industrial Design because of his passion for arts. At the time there werenā€™t many options for Visual Arts in Brazil, so he learned it on his own, animation being his main goal.

The process was slow at first, doing frame by frame of scanned photos, but after some time he became more in touch with Motion Graphics. By then, Kael had discovered many Brazilian animators and started learning After Effects.

Looks like Nobody Sausage really took off in October 2022, gaining 16.7 million followers that month alone.

SocialBlade now estimates that the YouTube channel is earning $13.5K ā€“ $215.9K per month via ad revenue šŸ¤Æ

Nobody Sausage might be making even more money from brand deals, having worked with the likes of Hugo Boss, Adidas and Netflix.

Info on the Netflix partnership from the NS websiteā€¦

For Netflixā€™s premier of the Red Notice movie, Nobody Sausage was invited to recreate the trailer and epic heist ā€“ animated Sausage style. After all, itā€™s what the platform really likes.

The recreated trailers were watched 1.53 times longer and engaged 62% more than the conventional trailer.

Apparently the standard rate to sponsor a creator with 1+ million followers is $10,000+ per post.

So with almost 30M followers across all platforms, Nobody Sausage could well be commanding $100,000+ for each brand deal šŸ¤‘

But letā€™s be conservative and say theyā€™re earning $50,000 per deal.

Last words from an interview with Kaelā€¦

ā€‹ā€‹I start my day slowā€”I do my daily meditation and yoga practice. After that, I go sit down with my sketchbook and get some creative ideas. I also check TikTok to see whatā€™s trending at the moment.

My most important advice is to have fun while creating content, to make your inner child happy. When my inner child is cheerful and excited, I know Iā€™m in the right place.

My latest batch of personal ramblings is here if you fancy a look šŸ‘€

From December 26, 2023ā€¦

Friends and family at home ask how my work is going, and it occurs to me that they might already know. They could be reading my finance reports or Momentos. I feel comfortable broadcasting those details online but prefer to give vague answers in person.
