$20,000/Month Reading Reddit Posts Aloud

Check out this video on YouTube šŸ‘‡

It's basically 15 minutes of someone reading out this popular Reddit thread with video game footage in the background.

The video has almost 10 million views in less than 2 years šŸ¤Æ

It's on a channel called Am I The Jerk?, described asā€¦

Voice actors acting out Reddit stories and adding insight / commentary

The channel only started in October 2021 and already has more than 1.1 million subscribers šŸ“ˆ

Hereā€™s their first video, same idea.

They've pumped out 3400 videos like that so far, which is an average of 4.1 per day šŸ’Ŗ

They have a podcast with the same content, and that somehow has racked up 9900 ratings on Spotify so apparently a lot of people are listening to it.

Social Blade estimates the YouTube channel to be earning as much as $100K/month from ads, but that's best-case scenario.

I'm guessing they're earning more like $20K/month on average šŸ’°

They also have a sister channel called Am I The Genius?, which follows the same model but for different types of Reddit posts.

That one could easily be earning $5K/month šŸ¤‘

Next, check out this video from coder Lewis Menelawsā€¦

He noticed the popularity of these types of videos on social media and created Reddit Video Maker Bot, a free tool that lets you easily create such videos yourself.

The voice that the tool outputs is computer generated šŸ¤– so it doesn't sound as good as a voice actor.

But even videos with the obvious bot voice can get a lot of views, like this one posted a couple of weeks ago on TikTok, 3.4 million views alreadyā€¦

Hereā€™s an idea if youā€™re a developer šŸ‘‡

Create a version of Reddit Video Maker Bot that uses the latest AI voice solutions from Eleven Labs. Sounds way better than the typical bot voice.

Or if you're really ambitious: let people create a voice model using their uploaded voice samples, so the bot sounds like them reading out the text šŸ¤“

Coffee Website Replaced Their Full-Time Income

Today's email is brought to you by The Authority Site System (TASS).

I've now done in-depth reviews of 40+ popular affiliate marketing courses, and TASS ranks #1.

That ranking isn't just based on my own extensive experience with the course ā€“ the 52 student reviews we've collected have the biggest say in the ranking šŸ¤©

A recent reviewā€¦

My wife and I worked through the material and found it immensely helpful. Based on the AH training, we began The Coffee Folk, an affiliate marketing website. It started slowly, but reached the point that it was earning around the amount either of us would make with our full-time jobs.

Anotherā€¦

What ultimately won me over were the numerous positive reviews of the course and the fact that they donā€™t make false promises of quick wealth. Instead, they provide a blueprint to steadily build a successful, profit-making affiliate website in a couple of years.

Helping Local Businesses = $800K Per Year

Daniel Thompson is a co-founder of Vancouver-based Saltwater DigitalĀ šŸ‡ØšŸ‡¦

They provide ā€œdigital marketing solutions for small businessesā€ ā€¦ so services like web design, SEO, paid ads, etc.

šŸ’¬ In a recent interview, Daniel revealsā€¦

We generated $800,000 in revenue and ~$150,000 in net profit in 2023.

Might not seem like a ton of profit, but that's likely after paying the salaries of the 2 founders, plus they have several employees and contractors.

Daniel againā€¦

My partner and I got started in 2011 building niche sites. We would rank websites, put affiliate links on them, and earn a commission.

Butā€¦

In 2014, we made the switch to start serving local businesses.

The main reason, it was a lot easier to rank a local business than it was for lucrative affiliate terms.

I'm sure that still holds true for most places. Might be worth doing some keyword research for your local area, see what you could rank for šŸ‘€

Daniel reckons local businesses are always looking for helpā€¦

Most businesses need some form of digital marketing. Trying to find solid providers at a reasonable cost is difficult. Bigger agencies tend to be very expensive and working with freelancers can be a coin flip in terms of quality.

šŸ¤‘ How Saltwater got their first clientā€¦

In 2013, we signed up our first client who was a referral from a friend. I think we charged him $400/month, and I spent a ton of time working on his campaign. And we grew from there.

He addsā€¦

The beautiful thing about service businesses is they are incredibly simple to launch. There are virtually no upfront costs outside of our own time.

Plenty of services you could try this with šŸ‘‡

  • Web design

  • SEO

  • Paid ads

  • Google My Business listing

  • Social media management

  • Email marketing / Newsletter service

  • Etc.

Last words from Danielā€¦

Starting a side gig has never been easier. There are so many good ways to make money and learn a new skill or two. And once you start you never know where itā€™s going to take you. I never imagined that learning SEO would lead me down the path Iā€™m currently on.

My first site sucked, and whatever you do at first also wonā€™t be very good. But you just need to start and start practicing.

šŸ—‚ She Makes $240K/Year Writing Resumes

From the archive, published January 2023ā€¦

Mary Southern is the founder of Resume Assassin, a resume writing service šŸ“

Starting out, Mary didnā€™t think she had many skills to start a business, and had narrowed down her list of business ideas toā€¦

  • dog walking

  • dog poop cleanup šŸ’©

  • alcohol delivery service

  • resume writing

Fortunately, she decided to give resume writing a go, and one of her first ā€œgreat decisionsā€ was to reach out to a resume-writing company in her local area (Austin) and ask them for some adviceā€¦

The company that I reached out to was willing to set up a phone call and chatā€¦ they gave me some great advice and pointed me in the direction of a professional organization created specifically for resume writers and career coaches.

IMO, this is a severely underrated and underutilized tactic when starting a business.Ā

What if you reached out to 5 people who have created a successful business that youā€™d like to emulate? Even if only one of them agreed to have a quick chat with you, that could be a game changer.

Also of note from Maryā€™s story: she found her first clients by keeping her prices low. Her packages started at just $100 and some projects would take her 8+ hours to complete šŸ˜©

Five years later, having grown her business from $32K per year to $26K+ per month, her prices look like thisā€¦

$499 for an entry-level resume, $549 for a mid-level resume, $599 for a leadership resume, $649 for an executive resume, $150 for a cover letter, and $349 for LinkedIn optimization.

Mary mentions that she struggled with confidence when starting out, but she didnā€™t let that stop her from building a successful business šŸ’Ŗ

He's Earned $2+ Million From Selling Blogs

Marc Andre is the founder of FlipMySite, who started his first blog as a side project in 2007.

He's since started and sold several blogs šŸ˜Ž

In a recent interview, he revealsā€¦

In total, I've had six different six-figure exits, totaling over $2 million.

In 2023 alone, I sold three blogs for a combined total of about $800,000.

šŸ’” His big "aha" moment happened back in 2008-09ā€¦

a blogger I knew sold his blog on Flippa for $40k and it really opened my eyes. Ever since then, I've built my websites and blogs with the intention of selling them at some point.

Marc eventually sold the blog he'd started in 2007ā€¦

I would end up selling it in 2013 for $500,000. By the time I sold it, it was making about $25,000 per month in profit.

Unfortunately, he doesn't reveal what the site was, though this article in Forbes backs up his story šŸ‘

And Marc reveals here that he started three photography websites from 2012-15, and had sold them all by 2018 for ~$700,000 šŸ¤‘

His unusual advice for starting a blogā€¦

a lot of people say you should focus on low-competition niches. But all of my successful blogs and websites have been in popular, crowded nichesā€¦

The monetization possibilities in popular niches are usually a lot more significant than what you'll find in lower-competition niches.

I don't attempt to become an industry leader. I just try to take a small part of a bigger pie.

Marc's favorite monetization method is selling digital products, for several reasons šŸ‘‡

ā€“ Your income is much less dependent on traffic levels.
ā€“ Your products can generate revenue for years.
ā€“ Growing and scaling is easier and more lucrative.
ā€“ There are lots of opportunities for collaboration.
ā€“ You donā€™t need a huge audience or high traffic to make good money.
ā€“ More of the details are in your control (compared to affiliate marketing or monetizing with ads).

He started off monetizing with display ads butā€¦

I hated the fact that I was constantly chasing traffic. Creating and selling products allowed me to make money without being so dependent on traffic.

šŸ’¬ Last words from Marcā€¦

I don't think I'm an outlier. Blogs are very viable options for indie hackers [solo operators].

But it does take a lot of work. Most people want quick results and it usually doesnā€™t happen that way.

Think about Marc's first blog: started in 2007 and he got it to $25K/month in profit before selling in 2013.

That's 6 years of constant effort, or 312 weeks. And he probably earned very little from that blog his first 2 years šŸ˜³

That's the kind of dedication and discipline it takes to make millions online.

šŸ—‚ $7500/Month Hunting Gear Website

From the archive, published March 2022ā€¦

The site is Hunting Gear Deals šŸ‘ˆ

Camron Stover bought the site for $100,000 a few years back and says in a recent interview that he earned that amount back in 14-15 months. Last year the site pulled in $90,000, primarily via affiliate marketing.

Lots of great stuff in the interview and accompanying text, but something that really stood out to me is how Camron repurposes other peopleā€™s YouTube videos into written content for his blogā€¦

Another outreach tactic Camron has found success with is reaching out to YouTubers who are reviewing hunting gear but do not have blogs. He asks if he can turn their review into a blog post and will embed their video into the post.

This is a win-win as it generates Google traffic for Camron and also puts more eyeballs on the video and the ownerā€™s YouTube channel.

Also worth noting that Camron has built up the site while working a 9-to-5 job with a daily 1 hour and 40 minute commute šŸ¤Æ
