Business Ideas Newsletter

Hey, it's Niall šŸ‘‹

If you want a business that’s simple to start, quick to launch, and compounds over time… newsletters are hard to beat.

Today’s email is all about newsletter businesses – and the real money they’re making.

A good mix of examples below… šŸ¤‘

  • Small town local newsletter = $10K/mo

  • Deals curation newsletter = $100K/year

  • AI-powered newsletter = $500K/year

The blueprint is simple…

  1. Pick a specific niche

  2. Show up consistently

  3. Then layer in monetization

And there are many ways to monetize…

āœ… Ads
āœ… Premium upgrades
āœ… Digital products
āœ… Physical products
āœ… Events
āœ… Selling services
āœ… Affiliate marketing
āœ… Job boards
āœ… Legal notices
āœ… Etc.

With the new year around the corner, if you’re thinking to start a newsletter, now’s the time šŸ’Ŗ

CURATED NEWSLETTER

$100K Per Year Newsletter Curating Airbnb Deals

šŸ’¬ A recent interview with founder Chris Cerra…

How Chris describes RemoteBase…

We find and curate the best accommodation deals for the digital nomad or the traveling remote worker… some people [say it's] like Scott's Cheap Flights for Airbnb.

Chris started the newsletter in 2019 šŸš€

Growth was slow initially, and he paused operations for several months during the pandemic.

Now he's got almost 11K subscribers, sends 2x per month, and earns $100K+ per year šŸ¤‘

Each edition of the newsletter is a big list of Airbnb deals with ad spots in between.

Chris also has a premium upgrade for the newsletter, but it sounds like most revenue comes from the ads in the free version šŸ’°

Another example of a curated newsletter…

What kind of information or data could you curate that a niche audience would find valuable?

Perhaps something also related to deals, like RemoteBase and Scott's Cheap Flights. The latter became a multi-million dollar business 🤯

LOCAL NEWSLETTER

Earning $10K/Month From His Year-Old Local Newsletter

Derek Carlson runs Bend Buzz, a 3x weekly newsletter about Bend, Oregon (pop. 108,000).

He recently shared that it took him 13 months to start earning more than $10K/month from the newsletter šŸ˜Ž

Breakdown is 80% direct ads. 10% other (job board, premium memberships, etc), 10% social media deals.

Expenses around 20% for ads, tech, and a freelance writer…

14k subs. I have two ad spots per newsletter and charge anywhere from $300 - $500 per ad, depending on the client.

He says he barely does any outreach for advertisers; they all come to him šŸ”„

Regarding the job board…

Grabbed a free Wordpress plugin that I added to my website… Folks can post jobs for $25 and I include them in the newsletter every Wednesday.

šŸ“ˆ Derek apparently ran ads to grow fast…

I just hit 10k subs in my local newsletter and about 1/3 of those have been organic… if you can’t invest in ads you’re gonna have a really hard time growing the newsletter to a point where it’s worth the time and effort.

For organic growth, posting in the r/Bend subreddit worked well…

I was lucky that my subreddit and mods were very receptive to the posts.

AUTOMATED NEWSLETTER

He Makes $500K/Year With This Automated Newsletter

From a recent breakdown of Salina311, a daily newsletter for Salina, Kansas (pop 46,000)...

27k free subscribers, 2.5k paid subscribers… Started by Matt Moody, a serial AI/ML entrepreneur, in 2021

The $500K/year revenue comes via šŸ‘‡

  • Advertising: $180K

  • Subscriptions: $220K (digital & print)

  • Events: $12K

  • Legal notices: $95K

🧐 The really interesting part…

The content in Salina311 is all automated by specialized agents. Some examples:

Public Meeting Agent: Transcribes public meetings on YouTube with OpenAI Whisper, identifies key points, turns key points into headlines, writes articles and sends to Ghost by API, sends Matt a text message to review (by Twilio)

Interview Agent: Uses Gmail API to conduct back and forth async interviews with public figures. Once interview is finished, drafts article, sends to Ghost by API, and sends Matt a text message to review…

Scraping crime statistics and local crimes committed into a weekly crime newsletter

Scraping obituaries posted elsewhere and parsing those submitted by forms into a weekly obituaries section

There's an 80-minute interview with Matt on YouTube if you want to dive deeper.

What newsletter content could you automate with AI? šŸ¤”

Perhaps an interview-focused newsletter for a particular niche using that interview agent?
