WEEKEND PROJECT

$3K/Month From a 3-Day Wordle Clone (4 Years Later)

πŸ“ KLaci, a Budapest-based dev and movie nerd, writes about a side project he almost killed in its first weekend.

In March 2022, riding the Wordle hype, he built Actorle – a guess-the-actor daily puzzle – in 3 days.

Launch went badly...

I posted on Reddit and a few forums. Two of the top comments were "insanely hard to win" and "literally unplayable", the second one because I'd forgotten to add John Hurt to the database.

I almost killed the project that weekend.

A tiny British humor newsletter featured it next. Then he added the feature that changed everything: a "share your score on Twitter" button.

Virality has to be designed in.

The Wordle-style shareable score grid is what carried Actorle. Without that one feature it would've died in week 2.

Mashable picked it up. Accounts with 10K+ followers started posting their grids πŸ“ˆ

Four years later πŸ‘‡

  • ~10K daily active users

  • ~$3K/month from display ads

  • A small portfolio of spinoffs

  • Very low maintenance

His pitch to other indie devs...

'Build a B2B SaaS' isn't the only indie path.

A low-maintenance daily consumer game is a real business too.

You could vibe-code a Wordle-for-X this weekend – sports, music, anime – using a free public API for the data.

Just don't ship without that shareable score grid 😎

AI NEWSLETTERS

He Built 350+ AI Local Newsletters – Then Got Acquired

πŸ“ Matthew Henderson built an AI newsletter so his grandparents could keep up with their hometown.

Then he scaled it.

By early 2025, his network Good Daily was running 350+ daily local newsletters across 47 states. All AI-driven πŸ€–

One person at the controls.

In July, 6AM City – the biggest US local newsletter publisher – acquired Good Daily and made Henderson VP of Engineering.

😎 He'd added 500K+ subscribers in under a year, with markets as small as Rock Springs, WY (pop. 20K).

It's also reshaping how 6AM City scales.

From a recent podcast, COO Ryan Heafy laid out the math πŸ‘‡

For a quarter million dollars, I can go turn on a city... be live in 90 days and be profitable in two years...

…now I can be up and running in one day and be profitable in two days and be in any city we want to be in.

Pick a small town nobody's covering and spin up your own AI-driven daily digest, monetized via local ads πŸ€‘

POINTS GUY

$231K From a Credit Card Side Hustle Nobody's Touching

Colin Stroud spent a weekend learning credit card rewards.

A year later, he apparently cleared $231,000 – on about $100/mo in software, no ads 🀯

He's a rewards consultant. He sits with small business owners, looks at what they already spend, and rebuilds their card setup to earn 2.5–3% back instead of 1%.

His own parents ran their medical practice on a 1% cashback card, spending $40K+ a month. Colin reworked it and saved them over $20,000 in travel.

A contractor dropping $60K/mo on materials earns just $600 back at 1%. The right cards bump that to $1,800.

Colin charges $875, one time, to set it up – recouped in weeks.

The gap nobody's filling: every "points" blog out there is written for travel hackers. Nobody's sitting down with the plumber or the dentist πŸ‘€

He lands clients posting daily on LinkedIn, where this niche has almost no competition πŸ”₯

And you don't need to have visited 60 countries – just know more than your client. A free course at The Daily Drop plus a tool like Seats.aero gets you most of the way there.

Pick one type of business owner – dentists, contractors, restaurants – and become their points guy 😎
